Vintage clothing often does not fit modern sizing and labelling standards. So it is important to know your own personal measurements when selecting vintage garments online to ensure a proper fit.
This is how we measure our garments. These may or may not be the same measurements you find in other arenas. This guide is provided to help you understand what measurements we have taken, what personal measurements to take to ensure a proper fit, and what measurements to request if needed.
- measurements for shirts
- measurements for dresses
- measurements for pants
- All Measurements are taken with the garment “at rest”- that is, flattened, but not stretched.
- Arm Hole is measured from the inside of the garment, from the top side seam to the bottom side seam with the sleeve pulled fully flat.
- arm length or Sleeve Length is measured from where the sleeve attatches to the garment to the end of the sleeve.
- front bodice length is measured from the topmost point of the center of the dress/slip/garment to the center waist point or where the bodice attaches to the skirt. In cases of tops or corsets, to the bottom hem.
- back bodice length is measured along the spine, from the collar to the bottom hem of the bodice, where it attaches to the skirt or in case of a top or corset, to the bottom hem.
- Center Front is measured from the top of the closed collar to the bottom hem of the garment.
- Center Back is measured from the top of the garment’s collar in back to the bottom of the garment.
- Collar is measured from edge to edge of the collar, pressed flat ( for button front shirts), or closed for other garments.
- Cuff- when present, cuffs are measured from top to bottom edge
- Drop (aka Waist Drop)- is measured from the top of the waist to the point where the crotch and inseams meet.
- Hip Width – is measured at the widest point of the hips by laying the garment flat, measuring the front from side seam to side seam, and doubling this measurement.
- Inseam – is measured along the inside leg seam from the point where the seam for each leg meets to the bottom of the hem at the ankle.
- Shoulder Seam is measured along the top shoulder seam from the collar to where the sleeve joins the garment.
- Skirt Length is measured from the waist (if there is a waist seam, from this point, otherwise from the narrowest portion of the garment) to the bottom hem.
- Skirt Width is measured with the skirt flat and fully extended, from side seam to side seam, then doubled. In some cases multiple skirt widths are taken, usually at hip, knee, and bottom hem.
